Transportation, Logistics & Fleet

Published July 2026 · Last updated July 2026

Freight margin is decided lane by lane and load by load, against fuel, driver wages, and market rates that move on their own clock. Most operators can tell you what they earned. Far fewer can tell you which lanes earned it.

Who this is for

Truckload, LTL, and refrigerated carriers; third-party logistics providers and freight brokers; last-mile and dedicated fleets; ocean carriers, customs brokers, and freight forwarders; and warehousing operations.

The problem

Cost per mile is an average, and averages hide the thing you need to know. A network can post an acceptable blended number while a quarter of its lanes run at a loss, subsidized by the rest. The lanes that lose money rarely announce themselves — they’re usually the ones with good volume and bad geography.

Empty miles and dwell are the classic invisible costs. Neither appears as a line item. Both are paid for out of margin, every day, and both are measurable if the data is assembled.

Then there’s everything outside the operation. Diesel, driver wages, spot and contract rates, and severe weather all move independently and all land on the same P&L. When a quarter comes in soft, the question is always whether the operation slipped or the market moved — and answering it after the fact, from memory, is not a strategy.

What we build

Embedded operational intelligence. Margin at the lane, load, customer, and terminal level — not a blended cost per mile, but the distribution behind it.

External signal intelligence. Diesel, freight-rate, and driver-wage indices joined to your own cost base, plus severe-weather and seasonal signals tied to service risk and capacity. What the market did, separated from what the operation did.

Peer benchmarking. Cost per mile, empty-mile rate, revenue per loaded mile, dwell, and on-time performance against comparable operators by type and size.

Natural-language analysis. Ask which customers’ freight is unprofitable after accessorials, or where deadhead is concentrated, and get the answer without a report request.

Measures we surface

How it’s delivered

Pathfinder Elements brings the platform to market three ways. We work directly with organizations where a sector’s operating model calls for close design work. We license to resellers and distribution partners who already serve a market and deliver the platform, configured, to their own customers. And we co-develop sector capability with software and services partners, combining our analytics core with their domain systems and market access. Prospective partners are welcome to get in touch.
